Stains and Blemishes

It is a lot easier to clean a fresh stain then have to remove a stubborn blemish once it hardened, dried and set in. Most of the time if the stain is paste-like or solid it can easily be removed with a spatula or table knife. If it contains excess liquids, you can blot it with a piece of cloth, paper towels, or kitty litter. If kitty litter is applied, you can vacuum it afterward.

Tough Turtle Turf artificial grass fibers are stain resistant, but it is important to realize that some of the cleaning products that are safe to clean on top of the threads, might harm the other parts of the turf. Cleaning solutions are into two groups; group one can be used in an unlimited amount onto the surface of the grass, the second should be applied lightly with a piece of cloth that is soaked with the cleaner, this will minimize any saturation that may harm the bottom of the turf.

You can apply the following cleaners without having any special precautions:

  • Any “Simple Green” cleaner. Make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Mix 3% of ammonia in hot water for more stubborn stains.
  • Do not use any caustic cleaner or chlorine bleaches (above 9 pHs)or any other high acidic cleansers (below 5ph)
  • Hose the area with cold water to remove the ammonia, soap, or detergent.
  • Use a cloth to blot up any excess liquid.

A mild household detergent can be used for more delicate fabrics. Mix one teaspoon into a pint of water. The group will clean the following stains:

  • Urine
  • Blood
  • Dye
  • Cola
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Milk
  • Fruit juices
  • Alcohol
  • Vegetable juices
  • Cocoa
  • Ketchup
  • Mustard
  • Ice Cream
  • Butter
  • Glue
  • Watercolors
  • Latex paint

The second group of cleaners must be applied sparingly and be cautious to avoid penetration under the turf. Grease spots and mineral spirits removers such as perchloroethylene sold in many stores and supermarkets. These cleaners will handle the following oil-base stains:

  • Motor oil and grease
  • Crayons
  • Lipstick
  • Floor wax

Hydrogen peroxide in water with a sponge removes mold and fungus. When done, wash with clean water.

Depending on how much traffic you get on your turf is determined by how much you should regularity brush your artificial grass. Matting can occur when there is high foot traffic, even more likely when the turf contains pollutants, or has been soiled with dirt.

Regular cross brushing of synthetic turf can help recover the look of the turf. “Cross brushing” is when you brush against the nap, grain, or sweep the turf. When the fiber is brushed, the fibers become fluffed. Make sure to always brush with synthetic bristles, never use harsh brushes such as wire bristles, or metal, because it will damage the turf.

It is essential to brush the area with the most substantial traffic, as the areas will look different from the spaces that don’t. When you regularly brush you will extend the life of your turf and will require less maintenance.

Examples of High Traffic Area

  • Multiple dogs
  • Heavy activity such as play
  • Commercial applications
